Friends Meeting Minutes

Friends of the Taft Public Library Meeting Minutes 2/17/2017

In attendance were Gaye Porticello, Sue Allen, Leesa Michaels, Andrew Jenrich and Caitriona Scott.

Library Update:

Per Andrew the Kindle tablets are up and running, the kindle fires for the children’s area are in house only and the Kindles in the adult area are for circulation.

Andrew is in the process of getting quotes for the cabinetry work; he has a quote from Signature; Custom Kitchens and Zooks are coming to do quotes. He is also getting quotes for fencing from Miller, Champion and Mr. Fence.

The window film treatment has been ordered.

History of the Library: Andrew said more time was needed to get all the historical artifacts ready in addition to getting more display cases for some items such as ledgers.  A decision was made to postpone the event until September.

Seed Exchange:  Leesa set up the seed display cabinet, complete with seeds and literature.  She discussed ideas with Nurse Tara Bellafontaine at Clough, regarding incorporating the seed exchange program with the School garden/enrichment class.  She also reached out to some local agri.- and nursery businesses and so far has received a positive response from Koopmans and The Mendon Greenhouse.  This event is scheduled for March 25th, 11am-1pm.  Gaye has been working on a poster for the event, which will be placed in various locations around town.  Gaye also wrote an initial announcement on the event for the town crier.

Babysitter Meet and Greet:  This event has been rescheduled for April 1st, between 10am-12pm, due to conflicts with other town events.  On line registration will start in March.  Caitriona reached out to the middle and high schools and received a very positive response from both.  She will create flyers of the event for the schools.  Leesa provided a list of local daycares, which combined with the elementary schools’, Caitriona will create and provide flyers for.  Gaye is writing a piece for the town crier, which will be submitted to the town crier by Andrew.

Memorial day Bake sale: Per Andrew, we will need to get approval to use the old Taft library location for the bake sale.

Summer Reading Update:

Andrew and Tara are researching an automatic, all inclusive package called Wando reader for summer reading registration. We discussed having more activities/crafts for the older (age 8-12) children and possibly a reintroduction of field trips.  We liked the idea of summer book clubs, grade by grade, based on required school reading.

Andrew discussed the YA summer reading program with the Miscoe librarian Karen Arnold. She is of the opinion that it would be easier to talk to the students about the program room by room.  He will discuss further with Mrs. Meyers.  We agreed on the purchase of a table top (dry erase) spin the wheel for $40, to be used for young adult prize selection.  Restrictions will be put in place, including no more than one prize per week.

Next meeting is scheduled for March 31st, 2017 at 5.30pm.
