The General By-laws were created by the Select Board in August 2024. The committee is established to receive, review, and recommend proposed amendments to the Mendon General By-laws.

Mission

To ensure that the Town's organizational documents are legally compliant, accurately reflect the needs and desires of our citizens, and maintain appropriate consistency across all operational and governance materials.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Review proposed amendments and recommend to the Select Board consideration of changes to the General By-laws.
  • Liaison with the existing town staff and committees as to their specific expertise, for example.
  • Examine and consider the implications of proposed changes and make recommendations to the Select Board.
  • In response to requests from the Select Board, review and make recommendations for changes to municipal policies and regulations.
  • Issue an opinion on any warrant articles regarding bylaw changes presented to the Town Meeting.
  • Review current By-laws, policies, and regulations to determine if changes are needed due to practice or good governance and to prepare appropriate amendments for action by the Select Board and Town.
  • Provide resources for people wishing to amend or propose By-laws via a Citizen's Petition.
  • Provide support during the implementation of new or amended Bylaws, policies, and regulations.
