Overview

The Mendon Conservation Commission is the official local agency responsible for safeguarding the town's natural resources. It operates under the authority of

  • The Conservation Commission Act (MGL C.40 §8c)
  • The Wetlands Protection Act (MGL C.131 § 40)
  • Mendon's Wetlands Protection By-law

The Commission has jurisdiction over activities such as filling, dredging, building, discharging, and land alteration within 100 feet of wetlands, and 200 feet of riverfront areas.

The Mendon Wetlands Protection By-law was passed on April 10, 2012, and was amended at the Annual Town Meeting on May 2, 2025.

The Mendon Wetlands Regulations and Fees was approved on September 12, 2012

Responsibilities

The Mendon Conservation Commission is also responsible for Open Space Planning and stewarding protected Conservation Areas in town. Over 800 acres are currently protected and are available to the public for trail access, passive recreation, and education opportunities.

If you are interested in Conservation Based Estate Planning or have questions about Wetland Permitting, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Conservation Department. Planning early for conservation or a new project will help you achieve your goals and protect our natural resources.

Wetland Permit Applications

In Massachusetts, the state Wetland Protection Act and regulations protect all wetland resource areas. Take time to read the Homeowners' Guide to Wetlands and Permitting. This is not a definitive determination of a wetland. See the Wetland Resource Area Graphic to visualize how jurisdictional Resource Areas may overlap.

  • Start a new permit
  • Public access to submitted projects/applications is available with the agenda typically posted 48 hours prior to the public meeting or public hearing. To request document copies prior to them being uploaded under the agenda, please email concom@mendonma.gov or visit the Conservation office to review physical copies.
  • Residents or abutters who would like to submit written testimony for the record of a public hearing / wetland permit applications may do so by sending an email to concom@mendonma.gov. If the testimony is not received by 10:00 AM by the day of the hearing, the Commission may not have sufficient time to consider it. Testimony should include your full name and address. Anonymous comments may not be accorded the same weight as identifiable sources.
